Proofreading and copyediting services
Why is proofreading important?
I entered journalism by working as a sub editor at Time Out London. Every piece of content written for the magazine - both in print and online - first went to the subs desk before being published.
Each writer’s copy was checked over for the essentials: spelling, punctuation, grammar. But thanks to Grammarly and similar tools, most writers have already spotted and corrected their typos.
The copy was also fact-checked, cut down in length and altered in tone. Sometimes, it was sent to the company’s legal team in case some of the content was contentious in some way. Sometimes, it was even rewritten altogether.
Basically, a sub editor’s job is to do anything that needs to be done in order make a piece of writing as good as it can be for publication.
It wasn’t until I became a staff writer, and wrote to tight, non-negotiable deadlines that I fully came to appreciate how much my writing benefited from being proofed and edited. In fact, I’d challenge you to find anyone whose writing doesn’t have that extra sparkle after a meticulous, thorough and sensitive edit.

“I’m so glad that I asked Matt to proofread my dissertation. He was able to work around my timings and provide helpful, constructive feedback and suggestions. He was also meticulous in picking up grammatical mistakes, meaning my overall work was polished. I’d recommend Matt for anyone who wants their written work given either a thorough proofreading or just a final glance-over.
